Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir sharply criticized the Israeli army for publicly opposing the Lavi fighter project, which was narrowly killed in a Cabinet vote last week. Shamir, who favored continuing the program, said “something irregular happened” with participation by “an element that never participates in public debates.” Meanwhile, an estimated 10,000 angry Israel Aircraft Industries employees circled the Cabinet office blowing trumpets and rams’ horns, symbolizing the march of the biblical Israelites that brought down the walls of Jericho.
