A Redding couple were in stable condition Sunday at a Cedar City, Utah, hospital after their rescue from a light plane crash in southern Utah’s rugged Cedar Breaks National Monument area which killed their pilot, authorities said. The survivors, Kathy Rice, 43 and her husband Kyle Rice, 45, were rescued by Iron County search-and-rescue workers and taken to Valley View Medical Center. Authorities identified the pilot as Michael Driskell of Anderson, Calif. Rescuers found the Rices after the couple had spent the night in the mountains where the aircraft had gone down. The plane was emitting an emergency signal that was picked up by the Civil Air Patrol. Authorities said the two were conscious and alert when they were discovered. The area the plane crashed in is extremely rugged and steep terrain, the sheriff said, and it was difficult getting them out.
