An unmarried, pregnant news anchorwoman in Boston is receiving overwhelming support from viewers after she announced that she had no plans to marry. Liz Walker, 36, evening news anchor at WBZ-TV, NBC’s local affiliate, made her announcement in June, station director Stan Hopkins told Broadcasting magazine. Since then, he said “viewers have written in about the situation and they are overwhelmingly supportive. They respect the fact a woman has made a decision on the issue and is responsible.” WBZ remains the top-rated news station in the city, according to the trade magazine. Walker, one of the highest-paid black women in broadcasting with a salary estimated at $500,000, said the “ticking of the biological clock” was a key factor in her decision to have a child. She has not revealed the identity of the father, whom she described as “not a public person,” and has no plans to marry him.
