Only 5, and Stuck in School

Dozens of kindergarten children entering nine elementary schools in the Tustin Unified School District on Tuesday were given free immunizations before being allowed to attend their opening day of classes.

Rosemary Kasparian, the school district’s health technician, said 45 children were immunized during a four-hour period at Guin Foss School, located in the 18400 block of Vanderlip Street.

She said several of the first-time students immunized were from outside the United States. She said 100 doses were given for polio, diphtheria, measles and rubella.

“Those without the proper immunizations were not allowed in any of the schools until they came here,” Kasparian said.

She said the school district has been conducting the first-day immunization program since 1980, but this was only the second time the immunizations were dispensed at the Guin Foss School.

“Those starting school after today who do not have the proper immunizations will have to go to the health department before entering school,” she said.
