Canada Cup Hockey : Host Team Wins, Faces Soviets in Final

Mario Lemieux capped a three-goal second period with two goals Wednesday night, lifting Canada to a 5-3 semifinal victory over Czechoslovakia and a berth against the Soviet Union in the Canada Cup final.

Trailing 2-0 entering the second period, Canada scored three times in a span of 2:25 to take the lead. Dale Hawerchuk and Lemieux scored 42 seconds apart midway through the period, and Lemieux added his seventh goal of the tournament 1:35 later to give the Canadians the lead.

Grant Fuhr made 21 saves for Canada, 4-0-2, and Dominik Hasek stopped 32 shots for Czechoslovakia, which finished 2-3-1. The teams tied 4-4 in the round-robin round.

Hawerchuk beat Hasek at 10:43 with a 50-foot slap shot that deflected off defenseman Bendrich Scerban. It wasHawerchuk’s third goal of the tournament. Thirteen seconds later, referee Mike Noeth waved off a goal by Glenn Anderson that replays indicated good.
