Billy Carter Has Cancer Surgery

ATLANTA —
Billy Carter, brother of former President Jimmy Carter, underwent surgery at Emory University Hospital today for what his wife said was cancer in his pancreas. The ex-President canceled a meeting with Pope John Paul II to rush to Billy’s bedside.
Sybil Carter said the surgery on her 50-year-old husband began about 8:30 a.m. and could take up to 12 hours. She said doctors planned to remove a malignancy from the lower portion of his pancreas.
