ORANGE COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL : Oilers Just Dominate Sea Kings

George Pascoe spent a large part of the off-season designing a Huntington Beach passing attack. Too bad he might not get much chance to use it this year.

With Jason McGehee pounding the middle and Skip Murray racing around the ends, the Oilers ran over Corona del Mar, 27-7, Friday night at Sheue Field.

McGehee, a 200-pound fullback, rushed 22 times for 141 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown run. Murray, a 160-pound speedster, gained 107 yards in 15 carries, one of which was a 15-yard scoring effort.

All told, the Oilers--behind an offensive line that averages 240 pounds--opened up such gaping holes that quarterback Chris Will couldn’t help but hand off and watch his running backs take off.

Will attempted just 5 passes and completed 2 for 18 yards. One was a 10-yard touchdown toss to John Apostle.

“When you’ve got guys as big as we’ve got, you had better run the ball,” Pascoe said afterwards. “You have to take advantage of what you have. But we still want to throw the football. That’s what we’ve worked on.”

Corona del Mar was ineffective until a substitute-filled fourth-quarter drive culminated in Sean Woolsey’s one-yard touchdown run with four seconds remaining.

Three possessions in the first half netted Corona del Mar just 24 yards, and with the Oilers’ ball-control offense chewing up large portions of the clock, the Sea Kings could get off but 30 offensive plays all night. Eighteen of those came in the final quarter.
