--”The Curtis Creek Manifesto,” by Sheridan Anderson (Frank Amato Publications, Portland, Ore.; $5.95) is a comic book of sorts. It also comes highly recommended as one of the best introductions to the sport.

--”The Complete Book of Modern Fly Fishing,” edited by Larry Solomon, (DBI Books, Northfield, Ill.; $8.95) offers advice on everything from fly tying to salt water fly fishing. Periodicals

--Fly Fisherman is a slick bimonthly covering the spectrum of fly fishing topics with considerable style ($18 a year, P.O. Box 3474, Mount Morris, Ill. 61054).

--The Royal Coachman--A personal guide for the fortunate fisherman is a bimonthly newsletter that reviews fishing spots and lodges around the world ($55 a year, P.O Box 117, Los Olivos, Calif. 93441). The circulation of this quality publication stands at 173. Clubs, Classes and Organizations

--California Trout, 870 Market St., Room 859, San Francisco 94102, (415) 392-8887) is a 3,000-member organization that is on the front line in the war to preserve trout streams in California.

--The Federation of Fly Fishers is a national organization with almost two dozen local clubs in Southern California, including the Antelope Valley Flyrodders, Conejo Valley Flyfishers, Deep Creek Flyfishers, Downey Flyfishers, Flyfishers Club of Orange County, Inglewood Flyfishermen, Long Beach Casting Club, Pasadena Casting Club, San Diego Flyfishers, San Gabriel Valley Flyfishers, Sespe Flyfishers, Sierra Pacific Flyfishers, and Wilderness Flyfishers. Many of the clubs hold fly-casting and fly-tying classes, lectures and outings throughout the year, as do local fly fishing shops. A sampling:

--Tuesday, the Wilderness Flyfishers will sponsor a slide presentation on fly fishing around the world by John Randolph, editor of Fly Fisherman magazine, at 6:30 p.m. at the Velvet Turtle, 2255 Sawtelle Blvd., West Los Angeles; $18 with reservations, $20 at the door. The same show will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, at no charge by the Sespe Flyfishers at the senior recreation center at Oak and Santa Clara streets in Ventura. Information: (805) 642-4359.

The show will also be presented at 6:30 p.m. Thursday by the Sierra Pacific Flyfishers at Odyssey restaurant, 15600 Odyssey Drive, Granada Hills; $15, $19 at door. Information: (818) 785-7306.

--The Fisherman’s Spot in Van Nuys teaches classes throughout the year, including private instruction in fly tying and casting. A basic class on equipment, terminology, conservation, and knots starts Wednesday at the Mid Valley YMCA, 6901 Lennox Ave., Van Nuys, $38. An eight-week fly-tying class will be held at the Learning Tree, 20920 Knapp St., Chatsworth, beginning Monday, $48. Information: (818) 785-7306.

--Sports Chalet, 920 Foothill Blvd., La Canada (818) 790-9800), offers fly-casting and fly-tying classes throughout the year. A fly-tying class starts Tuesday, and a casting class begins Friday; each class is $45.

--Marriotts Fly Fishing Store, 2700 W. Orangethorpe Ave., Fullerton (714) 525-1827), offers two-day beginning fly-fishing schools, including instruction in casting strategy, equipment, knots, and insect identification on weekends, and four-week beginning and intermediate fly-tying classes, $50 each.
