About 400 people gathered at the steps of City Hall to protest provisions of the new immigration law that are threatening to separate families whose members do not all qualify for amnesty. The purpose of the rally, sponsored by the Coalition for Family Unity and Human Rights, was to urge the Immigration and Naturalization Service to keep families intact until the immigration law can be amended, its organizers said. “It’s just incredible how the law is splitting the people,” said Carmen Lima, a coalition official. “There are hundreds of thousands of families who haven’t qualified (for amnesty).” The protesters gathered at Olympic Boulevard and marched down Broadway to City Hall. After numerous community activists had spoken in Spanish, an effigy of Howard W. Ezell, the INS’ Western regional commissioner, was kicked and torn apart by young men.
