PCAA Roundup : Fresno State, Facing UCLA Next, Beats Western Illinois

Senior Barry Belli kicked a 39-yard field goal with 11 seconds left to give Fresno State a 20-17 nonconference victory over Western Illinois Saturday night at Fresno.

Fresno, which lost to Washington State in its opener last week, faces UCLA at the Rose Bowl next Saturday.

Western Illinois had tied the game with 2:01 remaining on a 31-yard field goal by Layne Bennett after trailing by 10 points going into the fourth quarter.

Fresno State quarterbacks Dave Telford and Eric Buechele each had touchdown passes in the first half to give the Bulldogs a 14-7 halftime lead.

Western Illinois quarterback Paul Singer completed 29 of 47 passes, both school records, for 312 yards and a touchdown.

SW Louisiana 21, UNLV 10--Todd Scott’s touchdown off a blocked punt triggered a 21-point burst midway through the first half, and Southwestern Louisiana had a school-record six interceptions as the Ragin’ Cajuns defeated Nevada Las Vegas in a nonconference game at Lafayette, La.

UNLV also lost a fumble and was flagged 12 times for 108 yards in penalties.

Scott returned the first of two UNLV blocked punts 11 yards for a touchdown with 2:05 left in the first quarter. Then, within 4:04 after that, Southwestern Louisiana built a 21-0 halftime lead on a five-yard touchdown run by Joe Redding and a 27-yard scoring run by Terrence Harrison.

The Runnin’ Rebels’ points came on Elbert Woods’ eight-yard touchdown run and Jim Kook’s 22-yard field goal in the third quarter.

Pacific 31, CS Sacramento 7--Freshman quarterback Ron Beverly threw for one touchdown and ran for another to lead University of the Pacific to a nonconference victory at Stockton.

He completed 4 of 6 passes for 147 yards and ran for another 43 yards.

Rand Chatman scored on a two-yard run, Booker Guyton caught a 34-yard touchdown pass, and Anthony Williams scored on a one-yard run for Pacific.
