Sam Randolph, the 1985 U.S. Amateur champion seeking his first PGA Tour victory, charged past veterans Lee Trevino and Curtis Strange and took a four-stroke lead in Saturday’s third round of the $500,000 Bank of Boston golf tournament at Sutton, Mass.

Trailing Trevino by two strokes and Strange by one when the round began, Randolph, 23, a former USC star from Santa Barbara, made seven birdies without a bogey for a seven-under-par 64 and a 54-hole total of 199.

Playing in a threesome just ahead of Trevino and Strange, Randolph took the lead with five birdies for a 31 on the front nine. He added two more birdies for the 64 to go along with previous rounds of 67 and 68.
