Thousands of Israeli aircraft workers blocked traffic, lit bonfires, fought with police and smashed windows in two protests against the government’s decision last month to drop the Lavi jet fighter project. Three demonstrators were injured and 11 were arrested when club-wielding police moved in after water cannon had been used to disperse the crowd at the headquarters of the Histadrut Labor Federation in Tel Aviv. The Histadrut is aligned with the Labor party, which supported cancellation of the project. Later, police fired tear gas at protesters at the Israel Aircraft Industry compound, where workers built barricades.
