Nevada’s largest labor union set up picket lines at the nation’s nuclear testing grounds, and Gov. Richard Bryan issued a plea for expedited labor talks to resolve the issue. Jim Arnold, head of the powerful Culinary Union Local 226, said earlier this month that his organization could shut down the Nevada Test Site in the desert northwest of Las Vegas if it went on strike against Reynolds Electrical and Engineering Co. (REECO), the major contractor there. Union officials said 2,761 workers honored the picket line that went up after last-ditch bargaining failed to produce a contract.
