Baker Back at Job After Observation for Drug Reaction
White House chief of staff Howard H. Baker Jr. returned to work today after being hospitalized overnight for a reaction to antibiotics used to treat an intestinal problem.
The former senator, who succeeded Donald T. Regan at the White House last Feb. 27, went to Georgetown University Hospital on Tuesday suffering pain from diverticulitis, an inflammation of an organ or body cavity.
Presidential spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said the 61-year-old Baker is “just fine.”
“He had a slight problem with diverticulitis yesterday, had it checked out and then had a reaction, apparently, to some of the medicine, stayed overnight in the hospital but is at work this morning, full harness, no problem,” Fitzwater said.
Baker held his regular morning meeting with President Reagan in the Oval Office.
