A number of works by the late Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich were premiered on the opening day of an international string quartet competition in Leningrad on Tuesday, the official Tass news agency reported. Tass said the competition, named after Shostakovich, would end Sept. 25. It did not say which countries’ musicians were taking part. Shostakovich, credited as one of the greatest 20th-Century composers, incurred the disapproval of Soviet authorities at various times during a tumultuous career, but he was awarded top state honors before his death in 1975.
