Bill Would Change Pledge of Allegiance
Legislation to change the wording of the Pledge of Allegiance to include a reference to the Constitution was introduced Thursday in the Senate by Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska).
“The Constitution is the foundation of our government, our economic system and our society, and yet we fail to recognize it in our Pledge of Allegiance,” Stevens said.
The senator would add the words “and the Constitution” after the words “under God,” which were added by Congress in 1954.
Stevens’ version would read: “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God and the Constitution, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
To become part of the pledge, Stevens’ change would have to be approved by the Senate and the House of Representatives and signed by the President.
