Golf Roundup : Nakajima’s 62 Ties Record

Tommy Nakajima tied the course record with a 10-under-par 62 Thursday to take a two-stroke lead in the rain-shortened first round of the $600,000 Greater Milwaukee Open.

Play was called after a 2 1/2-hour rain delay with only half of the 156-man field finishing. The first round will be completed this morning with second-round play scheduled for this afternoon and Saturday morning, if necessary.

Nakajima blistered the soggy Tuckaway Country Club course with 10 birdies and an eagle to match Jim Thorpe’s record. He also had two bogeys for his lead over Hubert Green.

Eighteen players had rounds below 70 and 45 were under par before rain stopped play.

Rosie Jones sank a seven-foot birdie putt on her final hole for a five-under-par 67 to take a one-shot lead Jan Stephenson and Lauri Rinker after the first round of the $225,000 LPGA Safeco tournament at Kent, Wash.

Shelley Hamlin, Mary Beth Zimmerman and Missie Berteotti all shot 69s with Jerilyn Britz and Martha Nause tied at 70.

Bernhard Langer of West Germany and Zimbabwe-born Tony Johnstone shot eight-under-par 64s to share the lead after the first round of the $480,000 Lancome Trophy tournament at Saint Nom La Breteche, France.

Ian Woosnam of Wales was next at 65.
