Lutherans Present New Data on Women Clerics
Two-thirds of the 510 ordained women clergy of the Lutheran Church in America work full time as parish pastors, according to figures released by the denomination’s New York offices.
The data represent a change from an earlier study finding that women clergy had difficulty finding parish positions and so mainly took work as college or hospital chaplains or in other specialized ministries.
The Lutheran Church in America began ordaining women in 1971, and female clergy make up 7% of the active ministerial rolls. The denomination officially merges into the new Evangelical Lutheran Church in America on Jan. 1.
