* * * 1/2 “ROSIE FLORES.” Reprise. Any singer who knocks around L.A. without a record contract for as many years as Flores has, both as a solo act and a member of the Screamin’ Sirens, inevitably battles the stigma that something is wrong, otherwise she’d have been snapped up long ago. Flores’ knockout debut album should put an end to any such suspicions. Forcefully produced and arranged by Dwight Yoakam crony Pete Anderson, the album sizzles and cries, jumps and sighs behind Flores’ searingly expressive vocals that are in a league with such country music greats as Tammy Wynette and Patsy Cline. There’s not an ounce of the cuteness or calculation that mars so many country records, just human emotion--true, simple and direct. The song selection is virtually faultless, from the exquisite balladry of “Somebody Loses, Somebody Wins” to the exuberant Western swing of “Crying Over You.” Flores deserves an extra gold star for sharing some of the spotlight with another promising local talent--James Intveld--who wrote or co-wrote two songs, plays bass and contributes several scintillating harmonies.
