Unions Moved to Left

Share

Harry Bernstein’s Sept. 8 column was well-written and entertaining, if not persuasive.

Bernstein is in error when he describes me as “anti-union.” If that were so, I wouldn’t have spent so much of my life involved in union affairs. As I told Bernstein, many unions, along with the Democratic party, have moved radically to the left in the last generation. That doesn’t mean those of us who stood with them once have moved to the right.

A wise man observed recently that Socialist governments in our time have invariably proved to be “politically oppressive, culturally stifling and economically disastrous.” God knows that’s true of Big Labor and in recent years of the Screen Actors Guild board. If you don’t think SAG’s action in contributing money to the illegally striking and highly paid air controllers was radical, ask the out-of-work actors whose money was used.
