College Football : Michigan, Ohio State Take Offense : Buckeyes, After a Slow Start, Defeat Oregon by Pass and Run, 24-14

Vince Workman rushed for 162 yards and a touchdown and Tom Tupa passed for 2 touchdowns in a span of 1:14 in the third quarter as No. 5 Ohio State defeated Oregon, 24-14, Saturday.

The victory moved Ohio State to 2-0. Oregon fell to 1-1.

Tupa completed 20 of 32 passes for 234 yards. In the second half, the senior quarterback was 13 of 17 for 145 yards and 2 touchdowns.

“We didn’t get good third and fourth quarters from our defense,” Ohio State Coach Earle Bruce said, “but they certainly played well in the first two quarters.”

After Ohio State took a 3-0 lead at halftime, Tupa completed his first seven passes of the third quarter and eight of nine passes during an 88-yard drive that ended with a four-yard scoring pass to tight end Jay Koch. The touchdown was set up by a 44-yard pass from Tupa to flanker Everett Ross.

Ohio State rushed for 201 yards for a total offense of 435 yards. Oregon had 285 yards in total offense, although only 81 on the ground.
