The Belgian National Opera has appointed American choreographer Mark Morris to succeed Frenchman Maurice Bejart, who shocked the country by moving his acclaimed ballet troupe to Switzerland this summer after 27 years in Brussels, it was announced in Brussels. The Seattle-based Morris has won a number of awards, including the New York Dance and Performance Award in 1984. He plans to bring with him his 12-member Mark Morris Dance Group, Belgian newspapers said.
