In light of Woody Herman’s recent financial troubles, the National Academy of Jazz has established the Woody Herman Fund to assist other jazz musicians in need of emergency financial assistance. The bedridden bandleader was nearly evicted from his Hollywood Hills home earlier this month because of overdue rent. The fund is something the academy has been discussing since its organization two years ago, but academy president George Rappaport said that “Woody’s emergency, and the panic created among his loving fans and friends to meet it, opened our eyes to doing it now.” Donations may be sent to the Woody Herman Foundation Fund, National Academy of Jazz, 4475 Vineland Ave., North Hollywood 91602.
