“The Essential Steve Goodman.” Buddah. The title of this double album (now on one CD) is misleading, although it was accurate when originally released in the early ‘70s as a budget compilation of the Chicago singer-songwriter’s first two LPs. While not comprehensive of the numerous albums he made before his death in 1984, the 19 songs here--particularly the second half--demonstrate the humor and expert craft that characterized Goodman’s music. Contains the original version of his “City of New Orleans” as well as the delightful “Somebody Else’s Troubles,” featuring Bob Dylan on harmony vocals. Sound quality: average.** 1/2
