James E. Barnhill, named last week as publisher of the Denver Post when its ownership changes, said he has changed his mind and will remain publisher of the Herald-Republic in Yakima, Wash.

Barnhill, 56, was to have succeeded Richard T. Schlosberg III, who chose to remain with Times Mirror Co., which last week announced that it was selling the Post to a group led by William Dean Singleton. But this week Barnhill issued a three-page statement saying family considerations played a major role in his decision to remain in Yakima.

Singleton, who also owns the Yakima paper, said he was not ready to announce the Post’s future management structure. Singleton is expected to take control of the Post about Dec. 1.
