Israel on Alert as Nation Celebrates New Year

JERUSALEM —
Israelis celebrated the start of the Jewish New Year today, with rabbis blowing the traditional ram’s horn and soldiers on alert for the possibility of terrorist attacks.
The two-day Rosh Hashana holiday to observe the year 5748--the “year of joy” by the Hebrew calendar--coincided with the 40th anniversary of the birth of the modern Jewish state.
