SportsScope : El Camino to Play Bakersfield Saturday

El Camino College, winner of its first two games, has a rare afternoon home game Saturday, playing host to Bakersfield at 1:30 in a non-conference clash. The Warriors are ranked second in the state behind Taft and third in the nation by the J. C. Grid Wire after defeating Glendale and Saddleback, both highly rated before the season. El Camino quarterback Dan Speltz has completed 44 of 62 passes for 550 yards and 7 touchdowns. Receiver Dwight Pickens has scored four touchdowns.

Also on the junior college schedule Saturday, Harbor (1-1) plays Victor Valley College at Victorville High School and L. A. Southwest (1-1) plays host to Valley College at 1 p.m. Both are Southern California Athletic Conference contests.

The Loyola Marymount University women’s volleyball team, rebounding from a slow start, travels to Lincoln this weekend for the four-team Nebraska Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Lions will open against Nebraska on Friday, then play Illinois and Tennessee on Saturday. The Lions are coming off a straight-games victory over Cal State Fullerton that improved their record to 5-4 and have a four-match win streak. Junior Leslie Wohlford leads in kills (37) and digs (29), while senior Cathy Petrissans has 27 kills and a team-high hitting percentage of .407.

Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s soccer team plays at home against Metro State at 3 p.m. Friday while men and women play at UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday. The men are scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. game, the women at 7.

Serra, South Torrance and Redondo rose in this week’s CIF football coaches polls, while South Bay teams are No. 1 in both divisions of eight-man rankings. Serra, a big winner in its first two games, is rated second in the Northwestern Conference behind Burbank Burroughs. The Cavaliers ranked third last week. Redondo is rated sixth in the conference, up from seventh. South Torrance rose from eighth to sixth in the Coastal Conference. In the eight-man polls, Masada (2-0) is rated first in the large conference and Coast Christian (2-0) is tops in the small conference.

Miraleste is rated No. 1 in the CIF 4-A girls tennis poll this week with Rolling Hills third, Palos Verdes sixth and South Torrance ninth. In girls volleyball, Mira Costa is rated third in 5-A behind Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar and Bishop Montgomery is sixth. Other ranked volleyball teams are St. Bernard, eighth in 1-A, and Chadwick, ninth in Small Schools. In cross-country, Palos Verdes’ girls team is rated No. 1 in 4-A while its boys team is No. 2 behind Corona del Mar. The only other ranked cross-country team is St. Bernard’s girls, rated second in 1-A.

The UCLA men’s soccer team, ranked 15th nationally at 5-1, plays at Yale today and 18th-ranked Connecticut on Sunday. The Bruins are coming off two victories in the Patriot Invitational at George Mason University in Virginia. The victories included a 2-1 overtime win against George Mason on a goal by Jeff Hooker in the 108th minute. Yale is 2-0 and has not allowed a goal. Connecticut is 5-2-1 with a five-game home unbeaten streak.
