Orange County Roundup : Speedway Reunion Features Bast-Penhall Race

Seven-time U.S. champion Mike Bast will meet two-time world champion Bruce Penhall in a special, two-out-of-three match race to highlight the Great Speedway Reunion at 8 tonight at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

The program also will feature two-time U.S. champion Rick Woods in a match race against Danny (Beserkoo) Becker. Woods and Becker were two of the most popular riders to compete on the 190-yard track in the 1970s.

Dennis Sigalos and Ron Preston, members of the U.S. team that won the World Team Cup in 1981, also will be riding. The program will feature every retired national champion since racing began in Costa Mesa in 1969, with the exception of Steve Bast.

Bobby Schwartz and Mike Faria, the leading riders at Costa Mesa this season, will get their final tuneup before the 1987 U.S. championship scheduled for Oct. 3 at the Fairgrounds. Schwartz has won 11 scratch main events at Costa Mesa and Faria has won six.

Rancho Santiago College hosts its 11th annual over-the-line baseball tournament Oct. 4 on the Dons’ field.

There is a $25 entry fee for each three-man team, and the money raised will go to the Rancho Santiago baseball program. For more information or an entry application, call the Rancho Santiago baseball coach, Don Sneddon, at 667-3503.

The Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine men’s and women’s cross-country teams will travel to San Diego to compete in the Aztec Invitational at 8 a.m. Saturday.

The Fullerton women, led by seniors Mary Kenney and Jenni Scott, won the Fullerton Invitational last week. Kenney finished third overall and Scott fourth.

Dennis Shook and Erik Farian are the top performers on the Fullerton’s men’s team.

San Diego State, UCLA, Stanford, Cal Poly Pomona, Arizona and Arizona State also are scheduled to compete.

The U.S. women’s volleyball team will play Japan Oct. 3 at Bren Center on the campus of UC Irvine.

The match, which is the seventh in an exhibition series, starts at 7:30 and tickets are priced at $15, $12, $9 and $6. The event will benefit the Irvine volleyball program. For more information, call 856-5000.

The Beach Games are scheduled to take place at Salt Creek Beach Oct. 10 at 10 a.m.

Teams of 10 (five male and five females) will compete in four events. There will be six-on-six volleyball, a 300-yard open-water swim, a beach mile-run and an eight-on-eight tug of war.

Doug Linton was voted the most valuable player of the Toronto Blue Jays’ Class A team at Myrtle Beach, S.C. Linton, a right-handed pitcher who went to Canyon High School and UC Irvine, was 14-2 with a 1.55 earned-run average.

He and the other Toronto organization MVPs are being flown to Toronto to be honored before the Blue Jay-Tiger game Saturday.
