GOLDEN AGE:

Record producer Richard Perry has had numerous hits over the years with oldies, including Carly Simon & James Taylor’s “Mockingbird,” Art Garfunkel’s “I Only Have Eyes for You” and Ringo Starr’s “You’re Sixteen.” Perry has such an affinity for this material that he is working on an album of remakes of classic rock hits of the late ‘50s and early ‘60s.

The Warner Bros. album will feature one cut each by a variety of top contemporary stars. Perry has already recorded Michael McDonald’s version of Jerry Butler’s “For Your Precious Love” and Elton John’s rendition of Fats Domino’s “I’m Ready,” and said he also has commitments from Luther Vandross and the Pointer Sisters. He has also approached Paul Simon and Chrissie Hynde about the project.

“It’s meant to celebrate the glory years of rock ‘n’ roll,” said Perry, who in the late ‘50s was a teen-ager in Brooklyn. “Those were the peak years of the soul and the passion, when songs were filled with such fantastic raw emotion.

“This a labor of love for me,” Perry added. “It’s the most exciting project I’ve worked on since the Ringo album in 1973.”
