Surplus School Land Fetches $4.8 Million

The Orange Unified School District has sold 29 acres of surplus property for $4.8 million, a district spokesman said.

The property, located at the northwest corner of Windes Drive and Santiago Canyon Road in east Orange, was purchased by the Brea-based Dasco Co., the parent organization of D & D Development Co. Inc., which will develop the land for residential use, school board President William Steiner said.

“We approved a program to sell or lease surplus property to best generate revenue to meet the future needs of the district,” Steiner said. “Selling the Windes Drive property falls right in line with our directives to staff.”

The district is leasing Olive and Katella elementary schools to private schools and in 1986 sold Heim Elementary School for $1.8 million. Proceeds from the sale of district-owned properties cannot be used for general school purposes, but Steiner said the funds can be used to buy other school sites or construction within the district.
