Be Selective in Seeing India
Visitors to India may be trying to see too much in one trip, according to “Offbeat,” a travelers’ newsletter. Visitors to the subcontinent would do better to concentrate on one area at a time.
In the state of Rajasthan, in the northwest and next to Pakistan, attractions range from historical mansions to camel fairs to tigers.
In towns around Shekhawati are ancestral homes of the modern merchant class, who made their fortune through the opium trade in the 18th and 19th centuries. Spectacular murals cover the walls, depicting everything from Queen Victoria seated with Hindu gods, to elephants and Rolls-Royces, all indications of the owners’ opulence.
In Pushkar, the annual livestock fair is a big event. Entertainment includes camel rides, snake charmers, performing monkeys and dancing hjiras (male transvestites).
Tigers are the main attraction in Ranthambhor National Park. There are about 40 in residence.
