A number of changes to the Metro section of The Times begin with today’s edition.

Inside are two full pages devoted to science and medicine, topics that will receive special coverage each Monday.

The coverage will include news and explanatory articles, profiles, features, a column of brief items, occasional puzzles and informational graphics.

Other changes:

Weather. The weather page has been redesigned. New maps will highlight local forecast temperatures, display national weather patterns and forecast northern hemispheric air pressure systems. The changes answer requests of many readers for the more technical weather information--the added map extends into the Pacific Ocean to show weather patterns headed for the West Coast. At the same time, readers who merely want to know temperature and precipitation forecasts can easily find that information. The satellite weather photo will be retained, with a new caption.

Forecasts and maps will be provided by WeatherData Inc., based in Wichita, Kan. In addition to serving newspapers from California to Kentucky, WeatherData does specialized forecasting for businesses and industries. It also analyzes weather for the aviation industry to explain conditions in effect during aircraft accidents.

Death Notices have been moved to Part I. Today they appear on Page 14. News obituaries will appear on the same page.
