Britain’s opposition Labor Party, struggling to regroup after three successive election defeats, voted overwhelmingly to launch a radical policy review sought by party leader Neil Kinnock. Delegates at a party conference in Brighton also approved voting rules designed to reduce the power of organized labor in choosing parliamentary candidates. Party leftists accused Kinnock of planning to abandon Labor’s socialist beliefs in pursuit of the young, upwardly mobile voters who helped Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher win a third term in June. Meanwhile, in a British Broadcasting Corp. interview, Kinnock indicated that Labor may ditch its pledge to unilaterally scrap Britain’s nuclear weapons.
