Police clashed with 21 Buddhist monks and five other people who marched through the Tibetan capital of Lhasa demanding independence for the Himalayan region, the new China News Agency reported. The protesters delivered “agitating speeches” in front of the Jokhang Temple, the holiest shrine of Tibetan Buddhism, the agency said. An official at the Tibet People’s Broadcasting Station told United Press International in Beijing that a huge crowd of Buddhist pilgrims looked on as the demonstrators shouted slogans drawn from speeches in the United States by their exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.
