Democratic presidential candidate Gov. Michael S. Dukakis of Massachusetts raised $3.3 million for his campaign in the last three months, boosting his war chest to $8 million, a record for the party, aides said Tuesday.

“The first primary of any campaign is the money race,” campaign treasurer Robert Farmer said in remarks prepared for a $100-a-person fund-raiser at Boston’s World Trade Center. “We have won the first primary.”

Farmer said more than $3.3 million was raised between July and September, traditionally one of the slowest periods for politics. The latest report brings the campaign’s six-month receipts to $8 million, eclipsing the $6 million collected by 1984 Democratic nominee Walter F. Mondale during the first nine months of 1983.

Farmer said the report showed a broadening of Dukakis’ support, with 70% of the donations coming from outside Massachusetts and the average contribution totaling $175, down from $250 in the previous quarter.
