Not many people expected Hart and Saugus to enter the fourth week of the season with identical records. Hart captured the Northwestern Conference championship last year and was 13-1; Saugus went 0-for-1986 in 10 games.

But both teams are 2-1 heading into Friday night’s game at College of the Canyons. Judging by the season’s first three games, both teams are likely to put big numbers on the scoreboard.

Hart’s Darren Renfro leads Valley-area quarterbacks in passing (642 yards) and Saugus’ Jared Snyder is second (502).

Hart’s Brian Allen (13) and Joe DeSchryver (12) rank second and third in receptions. Hart tailback Howard Blackwell rushed for 124 yards last week in his first varsity game.

Saugus tailback Lamark Allen shares the Valley lead in scoring with Crespi’s Russell White with 42 points. Allen, who also has seven receptions, has 447 yards in total offense.

Passing: Three quarterbacks combined to complete 40 of 53 passes in Alemany’s 17-14 win over Granada Hills. Jeremy Leach of Granada Hills was 25 of 31 for 271 yards. Alemany starter Roy Talavera completed 4 of 6 and Joey Rosselli, who replaced Talavera in the second quarter, connected on 11 of 16. The trio combined for 492 yards. Leach had a string of eight straight completions. . . . Newbury Park quarterback Wayne Cook has not produced the numbers expected of him, completing only 18 of 62 passes in three games. But the junior has thrown five touchdown passes, has not been intercepted and has had several passes dropped.

Rushing: Four running backs from the Sunset League rushed for more than 100 yards last week: Mark Harris of Taft (10 carries, 146 yards), Mohammad Zaid of Van Nuys (11-134), Mike Conover of Canoga Park (33-124) and Bryan Addison of Chatsworth (12-112) all accomplished the feat.

Receiving: Granada Hills’ All-City tight end Sean Brown had nine receptions for 124 yards in Friday’s 17-14 loss to Alemany. Teammate Kyle Jan also had nine receptions, totaling 89 yards.
