San Dimas : Schools May Seek Tax Hike
Facing a shortfall of $143,000 for the current fiscal year, the Bonita Unified School District may turn to taxpayers in San Dimas and La Verne for help.
At last week’s board meeting, Trustee Robert Green proposed a ballot measure that would increase property taxes within the district.
Under the terms of a ballot initiative passed by California voters in June, 1986, the district may issue general obligation bonds to increase its revenue. However, the district must also raise property taxes to pay for the bonds, and that increase must be approved by a two-thirds majority of the voters in a special election.
“Really, the only option the district has is to go to the public and ask for this money,” Green said.
Supt. Mitchell Gilbert is studying the proposal at the direction of school board President Sue Moran. Green has scheduled an Oct. 8 meeting with representatives of the Bonita Unified Teachers Assn., the Parent-Teacher Assn. and the district chapter of the California School Employees Assn. to work out details.
