An underground explosion early Friday sent manhole covers flying and forced the closing of the downtown business area as power was knocked out to a number of buildings, including New Britain General Hospital, police said. No injuries were reported.

Police said that the explosion occurred in underground electrical power lines and that firefighters flushed the conduits to disperse the fumes from burning cables.
