‘TV’s Next Act to Clean Up’
Bravo Richard Frank (president of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences)! Your statements about TV cleaning up its act in regards to substance abuse were right (“Drugs, Drinking Are TV’s Next Act to Clean Up,” Op-Ed Page, Sept. 23).
On TV, when a crisis arises the main character reaches for a drink if the conflict is internal, or a gun if the conflict is more external in nature. Inability to resolve internal conflicts leads to self-destruction (substance abuse, suicide, etc.). Inability to resolve external conflicts in today’s world can ultimately result in global destruction.
TV is a potent force and we are all responsible for it. Let’s see more shows in which people help each other and heroically work hard to solve their problems without violence.
Substance abuse and violent behavior have similar roots. Let’s deal with those roots or eventually we will all be “last year’s issue.”
