The Treasury reported that Americans hold more U.S. savings bonds--$98.5 billion worth--than ever before. Sales of savings bonds totaled $474 million in September, bringing to a close the program’s most successful fiscal year since the end of World War II. Sales for the fiscal year ended Sept. 30 totaled $10.3 billion, 24% over the $8.3-billion record set in fiscal 1986. The total value of the bonds held by the public at the end of the fiscal year was $98.5 billion, 13% more than the $87.05 billion value a year ago.
