Four women have been detained in the Valencia region for allegedly plotting to dose their husbands with arsenic in the belief it would stop their infidelities, police said Thursday.

The plot was discovered after the police chief of the town of Alaqas, whose wife had accused him of adultery, was admitted to a hospital and tests showed he had been taking small amounts of arsenic in his food for several months. Police tapped the wives’ telephones and heard them discussing how the poison would prevent their husbands’ infidelities.
