Pat Quinn, president and general manager of the Vancouver Canucks, said he has been tainted for life by John Ziegler’s decision to expel him temporarily from the league for signing to become general manager of the Canucks while he was still coaching the Kings.
Quinn, testifying in the second day of the Canucks’ civil suit against the National Hockey League, said he was shocked and appalled when Ziegler, the NHL’s president, informed him of the expulsion Jan. 9.
“I told Ziegler he didn’t have all the facts,” Quinn said. “He didn’t know what was going on. I was appalled by the word expelled. It shocked me, it had such finality to it. It was devastating.”
After a league investigation, Ziegler fined the Canucks $310,000 and the Kings $110,000, and barred Quinn from coaching until the 1990-91 season.
The Canucks have asked the British Columbia Supreme Court to overturn Ziegler’s ruling and rescind the fines.
