Two people were killed when the motorcycle they were riding was hit by a suspected drunk driver who turned in front of them, the San Diego Sheriff’s Department reported Sunday.
Sgt. Ken Prue said David Lee Benton, 29, of Escondido, was taken into custody on suspicion of felony driving under the influence of alcohol after the accident Saturday night on Espola Road, south of Twin Peaks Road.
The victims were identified as Patrick E. Duffy, 39, and his passenger, Linda Darline Cole, 27, according to San Diego County Deputy Coroner Charles Kelly. Their hometowns were not known.
Prue said Duffy, who was also known as Patrick James Cameron, was driving his Harley-Davidson motorcycle southbound on Espola when the northbound pickup truck driven by Benton turned left into the path of the motorcycle.
Duffy was pronounced dead at the scene. Cole died about four hours later at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.
Benton was released Sunday afternoon after posting $10,000 bail, a jail spokesman said.
