NHL Roundup : Dionne, Rangers Turn On Power to Win, 4-2

The New York Rangers showed all kinds of power in beating the Minnesota North Stars, 4-2, Monday night at Madison Square Garden.

“We have a lot of snipers, everybody can shoot the puck on this team,” Marcel Dionne said after leading the Rangers’ attack with two goals and an assist.

Dionne was involved in three of four Ranger power-play goals as all the scoring in the game came with a man advantage.

Ranger Coach Michel Bergeron was happy not only with the power play, but the penalty killing, too. The North Stars managed only two goals on 11 manpower advantages.

“I thought that everyone was alert tonight,” Bergeron said.

The game marked the return of Herb Brooks to Madison Square Garden. Brooks, now coaching the North Stars, coached the Rangers from 1981 until he was dismissed in the middle of the 1985 season.

“I’m not really sentimental about that,” Brooks said. “I can’t worry about what happened here before.” Dionne, the second-leading pointmaker in NHL history behind Gordie Howe, assisted on a goal by Tomas Sandstrom at 10:14 before scoring a goal at 12:20 as the Rangers took a 2-0 lead in the first period.

Dionne also scored with 4:26 left in the game to give the Rangers (2-0-1) a 4-2 lead. The two scores left Dionne four shy of the 700-goal mark.

Quebec 5, Montreal 2--Michel Goulet scored three goals in a 4:36 span of the third period to cap a five-goal surge that carried the undefeated Nordiques (3-0) past the Canadiens at Montreal.

Goulet took a pass from Alan Haworth out of the corner and scored on a wrist shot at 14:16 to break a 2-2 tie. Goulet added a power-play score at 17:27 and completed the natural hat trick at 18:52 with his sixth goal of the season.

Winnipeg 3, Calgary 2--Daniel Berthiaume made 27 saves to help the Jets beat the Flames for the second straight time this season. Winnipeg has won 10 of the last 12 games from its Smythe Division rival.

Randy Carlisle scored a second-period goal and had an assist in the opening period that gave the Jets (2-0) a 2-0 lead.

Detroit 3, Vancouver 2--Greg Stefan provided outstanding goaltending for the second straight game and Gerard Gallant scored twice as the Red Wings beat the Canucks at Vancouver.

Stefan, coming off a 4-1 victory last Friday on the road over the Edmonton Oilers, stopped 24 Canuck shots.

Gallant scored a power-play goal in the first period and the right wing added another score in the third as the Red Wings improved to 2-1-0.
