Whittier College Receives Grant for Substance Abuse Program
Whittier College has received a grant of $104,000 from the Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education to implement a two-year pilot substance abuse program. Approximately 800 applications were submitted for similar projects. Only 75 to 100 were awarded.
A substance abuse task force including faculty, administrators and students was organized by Whittier College President Eugene S. Mills in 1986 to survey the needs of the campus regarding substance abuse. Many of the recommendations of this task force will be included in the college’s new drug abuse prevention program.
The college will hire a licensed clinical psychologist to organize the campuswide program and to provide individual counseling to students regarding substance abuse. Specifics projects which the college hopes to pursue include training key campus groups, developing support groups such as Students Against Drunk Driving and Adult Children of Alcoholics on campus, and increasing community links with local schools and Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital and the Chemical Dependency Center.
