Local News in Brief : Plea to, and for, Homeless

Share

Los Angeles City Councilwoman Ruth Galanter challenged Venice residents and businesses Thursday to find housing and jobs for the community’s homeless people, while also urging hundreds of vagrants camped on the beach to remove their makeshift shelters and seek help from the city and county.

Galanter, who represents Venice, called on the Los Angeles Police Department to “do a more thorough job” of policing the beach area and arresting homeless people who urinate in public, trespass on private property or break other laws.

Galanter urged the homeless to visit a counseling center set up two weeks ago at the Venice Pavilion. More than 200 people asked for help during the center’s first 10 days of operation, she said.
