Earthquake Afterthoughts and Preparing for the ‘Big One’

Share

Rarely have I been so moved as to write a letter, but I must express my thoughts on this occasion.

My husband and I live three blocks from the Whittier area which was so devastated by the recent quakes. We are in our mid-60s and have to state that we experienced sheer terror for the first time in our lives. And we were truly blessed. We had some damage to long-enjoyed belongings, damage to our apartment, etc., but we are in one piece and the essentials of our life are, thank God, undisturbed. Thousands of others were not nearly so fortunate.

I must thank and congratulate those news reporters who so gallantly carried on without prepared scripts and while ducking very real aftershocks to bring us the news of the devastation. I also must commend the police, fire department, Red Cross and the numerous others who worked to exhaustion to help the many victims of the disaster.
