Karpov, Kasparov End Third Chess Game in a Draw

The third game of the world championship chess match in Seville, Spain, ended in a draw Friday. Challenger Anatoly Karpov, a former world champion, leads the incumbent champion Gary Kasparov, 2-1.

Six victories or 12 1/2 points are needed for victory in the 24-game match. A victory scores one point, and a draw scores a half-point.

The fourth game will be played Monday.

Friday’s game was a quiet draw. The players used the Grunfeld Defense, repeating the first 12 moves of Monday’s first game, which also ended in a draw. Here are the moves.
