COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Big Eight Roundup : For No. 1 Oklahoma, a 59-10 Victory Isn’t as Easy as It Appears

Don’t poke fun at Kansas State for losing, 59-10, to No. 1 Oklahoma, Sooner Coach Barry Switzer says.

“Kansas State played a very physical, scrappy game,” Switzer said of the winless, 56-point underdogs. “They never quit and their defense competed very well.

“Coach Stan Parrish had them ready to play,” Switzer said. “He told me they would play hard, and they did. We had to execute well in the second half to take control.”

The Sooners, bolstered by several long runs in the second half, totaled 518 yards rushing and had nine players score in the Big Eight Conference game at Manhattan, Kan.

Said Parrish: “You make a mistake against them, and it’s a touchdown. I had nightmares last night thinking about how bad it could be if we put it on the ground.”

Parrish agreed there’s no shame in a lopsided loss to Oklahoma.

“There are a lot of teams they could do that to,” he said.

Anthony Stafford, Jamelle Holieway and Lydell Carr scored first-half touchdowns for the Sooners, who won their 15th straight.

The Wildcats, 0-6 and losers of 11 in a row, trailed by 18 points midway through the second period.

A 22-yard Mark Porter field goal and an 81-yard touchdown pass play from Gary Swim to John Williams trimmed Oklahoma’s lead to 28-10 with 7:02 left in the first half and fired up the small crowd of 27,200.

Late in the half, Kansas State linebacker Matt Wallerstedt sacked Charles Thompson on a third-down play and taunted the Oklahoma bench.

The Sooners (6-0) settled for a 31-yard field goal by R.D. Lashar and a 31-10 halftime lead but broke loose for touchdowns on their first two second-half possessions, putting the game out of reach. It was the Sooners’ 17th consecutive victory over Kansas State.

Holieway, playing about half the game, rushed for 102 yards. Halfback Eric Mitchel finished with 149.

Colorado 35, Kansas 10--Erich Kissick, a 205-pound sophomore fullback, ran for 122 yards and scored a touchdown as the Buffaloes trounced the Jayhawks at Boulder, Colo.

The Jayhawks put up an almost even fight through the first half and led, 3-0, early in the second quarter on Louis Klemp’s 43-yard field goal.

Quarterback Sal Aunese put the Buffaloes ahead, 7-3, on a one-yard run. Aunese then threw a 28-yard pass to give Colorado a lead that proved insurmountable.

Split end Drew Ferrando got the touchdown when he fell on a fumble by Eric Bieniemy, who had caught Aunese’s pass.

Kissick scored his touchdown in the third quarter on a three-yard run to give Colorado a 21-3 lead.

The Jayhawks brought the homecoming crowd of 43,514 to its feet late in the game when Kelly Donohoe connected with Willie Vaughn on a 98-yard touchdown play, tying a Big Eight Conference record.

Colorado is 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big Eight. Kansas fell to 1-5 and 0-2.

Missouri 42, Iowa St. 17--At Ames, Iowa, Robert Delpino ran 86 yards for a touchdown, and Erik McMillan returned an interception 39 yards for another score to spark a 28-point, fourth-quarter outburst that gave the Tigers a Big Eight victory over the Cyclones.

The Tigers rallied after trailing, 17-7, late in the first half and 17-14 heading into the final period to improve to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the Big Eight, the first time since 1980 that Missouri has opened conference play with two victories. Iowa State fell to 1-5 and 0-2.

Missouri drove 64 yards in 13 plays to finally take the lead, 21-17, on quarterback John Stollenwerck’s 4-yard touchdown run with 13:36 left in the game.

Delpino, a wide receiver last season, rushed for 177 yards in 10 carries. He ran 18 yards for a first-quarter touchdown and his 86-yard run was the first touchdown of three scored during a 5:48 span in the fourth quarter.
