Runs by Quarterback Veal Help Arizona Beat Oregon St., 31-17
TUCSON — Arizona quarterback Ronald Veal rushed for 142 yards and a touchdown and the Arizona defense held Oregon State quarterback Erik Wilhelm to two touchdowns as the Wildcats defeated the Beavers, 31-17, Saturday night in a Pacific 10 game.
Arizona is now 3-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the conference, while Oregon State feel to 2-4 and 0-2.
Veal, a true freshman, broke his own school rushing mark by a quarterback of 134 yards set only two weeks ago, as the Wildcats ran up 550 yards in total offense, their best ever in Pac-10 play.
The Wildcats rushed for 347 yards and Veal completed 15 of 23 passes for another 203 yards.
Arizona scored three second-quarter touchdowns, including Veal’s, to jump to a 21-10 halftime lead. Running backs Darryl Lewis and Reggie McGill scored on 3- and 4-yard runs.
The Beavers took a 7-0 lead on the first of Wilhelm’s two touchdown passes to tight end Phil Ross, a one-yarder.
Veal connected with flanker Derek Hill for a 5-yard touchdown in the third quarter to go up 28-10 before Wilhelm passed to Ross on a 5-yard scoring play to make it 28-17, but the Beavers would get no closer.
Wilhelm finished with 28 completions, 55 attempts and 318 yards.
